語源探訪の楽しみ＝語頭消失（３） ― peach

果物の“桃”、“ピーチ”ではありません。動詞です。

俗語の類で、“密告する”という意味があります。現代的には、“チクる”という奴です。

自動詞と他動詞の両方の用法が辞書に見えます。（ランダムハウス英和辞典）

自動詞の場合は、前置詞"on"や"against"を伴うことが多いようです。他動詞の場合は、密告の対象者を直接目的語にとります。

さて、今週のテーマである語源的な観点から見た本題ですが、"peach"の動詞としてのこのような意味をご存知ない方も、"impeach"という動詞、また"impeachment"という名詞はご存知だと思います。

動詞"peach"のこのような意味は、語源的には"impeach"と同じものがあり、アングロフランス語の"apecher"、さらには中期英語の"apeche"という語の頭音が消失して生まれたものと言われています。

ちなみに、"peche"という語は、“足枷”の意で、さらには足（ラテン語でpes、即ち英語のfoot）に遡ります。
