ラッパと笛 ― bells and whistles

"bells and whistles"という表現をご存知でしょうか？そのまま訳せば、”ベルとホイッスル”。これでは英語のカタカナそのものになってしまいますが、楽器で言えば、”ラッパと笛”ということになります。

ところで、”ラッパと笛”で何を言いたいのでしょうか？

アメリカ・ニューヨークを走るタクシーのお話です。

ニューヨークのタクシーはFord車だったようですが、新たに日産のタクシーがお目見えするそうです。従来のタクシーと異なるのは、室内装備なのだそうです。そのことを、"come equipped with all the bells and whistles"と表現しています。

引用記事から分かるのは、これまではなかった、利用客が自由に操作できるエアコン装置や運転手と会話できるインターフォン機能などが新たに加わったということで、"the bells and whistles"とはつまり、この種の新しい機能、装備品のことであると分かります。

といった訳語が見えます。

”ラッパと笛”という字義通りの表現がこのような意味で使われるようになった経緯は知りません。勝手な想像ですが、私は赤ちゃんからよちよち歩きの幼児くらいまでの子供に与えるおもちゃを想起させられます。色々な部分を押したり、ひねったり、握ったりするとラッパや笛の電子音が出るおもちゃのことなのですが・・・。

この"bells and whistles"という表現をインターネットで調べてみますと、多くのウェブサイトにおいて、”取るに足らないもの”といった、どちらかと言えばネガティヴな意味の説明が見られます。例えば、Merriam Websterの定義はこうなっています。


items or features that are useful or decorative but not essential : frills


同義語として挙げられている"frills"は、無用の装飾、虚飾、余分なもの、という意味です。

ニューヨークのタクシーの記事について言えば、そこまでネガティヴな意味はないように思えますが、見方によっては無用の機能と考えることもできるのかも知れません。
