米大統領選の話題 ― call back the hounds

当ブログであまり取り上げることのないアメリカ大統領選についてのニュースですが、アメリカ本土では熱戦が繰り広げられているのでしょう、グーグルニュースでもUS版では”Election”のセクションが設けられています。トップニュースも大統領選関連のものが多く、目にしない日はありません。お陰様でわたしも候補者の名前くらいは分かるようになりました。

ところでいつもはスルーしているのですが、今日は、候補者の一人Rick Santorum氏についての記事がたまたまに目に留まりました。タイトルが目を引いたからなのですが、ちょっと引用します。

Campaign: Santorum’s daughter expected to be released from hospital soon

WASHINGTON — GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s campaign says his hospitalized daughter is recovering and could be released soon.

Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley said Monday that 3-year-old Bella could be released from a northern Virginia hospital by the end of the day.

Santorum氏の3歳の娘のIsabellaちゃんが退院する見込み、というあっさりした短い記事です。入院していることの理由としては、"a rare genetic condition"（ごくまれな遺伝子関係の病気の類; 他記事によるとTrisomy（三染色性）と呼ばれる染色体異常）という説明があるだけで、Santorum氏と妻のKarenさんの写真が添えられています。

大統領選は現在Santorum氏の地元フィラデルフィアでの指名争いの真っ最中のようですが、写真からはそのような激戦の最中、我が子の病気に悩まされる同氏の悲痛な表情も窺えます。

さて、もうひとつ別の記事から引用します。


Santorum plans a rally in Bedford and then attend an event called "American Heartland Conversation on Faith, Family, and American Values" in Lancaster.

Front-runner Mitt Romney`s campaign today pulled a $2.9 million negative ad highlighting Santorum`s 18-point loss in the 2006 U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, which was to begin airing this morning.

The Romney campaign said it asked TV stations to air a substitute ad, "out of respect" for his rival`s family during Bella`s hospitalization.

入院中の我が子のケアのため一時休戦のSantorum氏でしたが、退院後は戦線に戻るようです。一方、迎え撃つのは（あるいは追撃するのは）、対するMitt Romney氏。氏はSantorum氏に対する大々的なネガティヴキャンペーンを展開する計画のようですが、こんな時期に不謹慎ではないかとの批判も免れません。こんな時期に、とはつまり、ターゲットになっているSantorum氏が家族のことで苦境に立たされているのに、ということです。Romney陣営はこの状況に配慮することにしたようです。

さらに別の記事ですが、結局Romney氏はネガティヴキャンペーンを見送ったというものです。


With Rick Santorum staying off the campaign trail for another day to be with his hospitalized toddler, front-runner Mitt Romney has suspended the barrage of negative campaign ads he’s been airing. That seems like a humane move, and he seems like the sort of guy who’d do it for that reason alone. But it may not be the only reason for Romney to call back the hounds.

今日は"call back the hounds"という表現を取り上げました。手持ちの辞書には、成句関連の参考書も含めてこの表現は載っていないのですが、コンテクストからも、また字義通りにも、意味は明らかだと思います。

"hounds"とは猟犬のことですが、猟犬を呼び戻すとはつまり相手を攻めることを一旦中止することです。

Romney氏もさすがにこのタイミングでのネガティヴキャンペーンはまずいと思ったのでしょうか。ただし、引用部分、"it may not be the only reason for Romney to call back the hounds"、ですので、実は様々な思惑と打算が働いているようです。
