three R's

読み、書き、算術、の3つの学力（能力）のことを、英語では


three R's


と呼びます。Reading、Writing、Arithmetic、それぞれの単語のRを取ったものです。日本語で言う、読み、書き、そろばん、と一緒ですね。

（ちなみに後で思ったのですが、3Rというと、Reduce, reuse, recycle、いわゆる資源の有効利用の話を思い出す方が多いかもしれませんね。）

ところで、Oxford大学の最近の研究によれば、脳に電気刺激を加えることで算術の能力が高まるという報告があるそうです。

"three R's"に追加して、4つ目の"R"となりうる、とやや冗談めかした引用部分ですが、この4つ目の"R"というのが、"random electrical stimulation"のことです。

脳に電気刺激を加えるなどというと何やら危なっかしいイメージがありますが、研究での電気刺激というのはごく弱いものらしく、研究を主導した同大学のKadosh教授に言うところでは、自宅では試さないで、ということです。
