Young boy steals show during speech by Pope Francis

A young boy took centre stage during an address by Pope Francis in St Peter's Square, then refused to leave his side.

The pontiff was addressing a crowd of families numbering in the tens of thousands when the youngster wandered on stage.

The little interloper drew smiles and pats on the head from Francis, hugging his legs, kissing his crucifix and even sitting on his chair at one point.

Efforts to draw him away were met with apparent stiff resistance, and more affection from the man of the hour.

バチカンでスピーチをしていたローマ法王フランシスコのステージに小さな男の子が上がってくるというハプニングがあったようです。

男の子は法王に近寄り、法王に頭を撫でられたりしましたが、法王が首から下げている十字架にキスをしたり、下肢にしがみついたり、果ては法王の椅子に座ったりもしたそうです。

ビデオを見ると、法王もやや困惑気味のように見えます。

さて、今日の表現、


steal the show


ですが、直訳するとショーを盗む、ということになります。

今回のハプニングは法王が演説するステージ、まさにある種の“ショー”の最中に起きたものですが、ショーに限らず、主役の座を奪う、あるいは主役・主流（と考えられていた存在）から話題や人気をかっさらう、というようなコンテクストで使われる成句です。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは下記のように定義されています。


If you say that someone or something steals the show, you mean that they get more attention or praise than the other people or things in a show or other event.


ちなみに、このように話題をかっさらうような人やもののことを、"a show-stealer"とも表現します。
