イギリスのトラス首相が就任1ヶ月半足らずで退陣を表明しましたが、後継候補が取り沙汰されています。

トラス氏と首相の座を争ったスナク氏が有力候補として名前が上がるのは当然のようにも思われますが、前任だったジョンソン氏の名前が出てくるとは思いませんでした。

尤も、今日のニュースでは、本人は出馬しないという意向を表明しているようです。

Former prime minister Boris Johnson pulled out of the contest to become Britain's next leader on Sunday, saying he had the support of enough lawmakers to progress to the next stage but far fewer than front-runner former finance minister Rishi Sunak.

不出馬を表明したジョンソン氏について、きっとそうだろうと思っていた、というオピニオン記事です。

記事のタイトルで、

Boris Johnson bottles it – again

とありますが、この"bottle"の意味が気になって調べてみました。

手元にある辞書には載っていなかったのですが、Cambridge Dictionary Onlineで、

to not do something because you are frightened; to fail at something because you are frightened

と定義されています。

つまり、怖気付いて踏み留まる、という意味なんですが、イギリス英語の俗語表現だということです。

改めて説明するまでもなく、"bottle"というのはビン（瓶）のことですが、動詞としての意味にはビンに詰める、保存するという意味があり、"bottle up"というフレーズには、隠す、（感情を）抑える、といった意味もあります。

今日取り上げた意味での"bottle"は、"bottle out"と表現することもあるそうです。
