thread the needle

このところSNS大手フェースブックの業績不振をよく耳にするようになりました。

社名をMeta（メタ）に変更したのは2019年？だったでしょうか、メタバースと言われるインターネット上の仮想空間を利用したサービスへ注力していくことを表明していたところでしたが、メタバースという概念がその分かり難さ故に未だ浸透しておらず、本業（！？）のSNS事業もユーザー離れが否めないようです。

Over the past year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has zeroed in on his passion project: the metaverse. It's a squishy concept that can describe a number of things, but in the broadest sense it's the idea that people connect with each other through virtual worlds rather than on a traditional social network.

But as I wrote recently, Meta's big pivot into the metaverse has been a disaster, with little to show for it other than a mediocre experience, increasingly expensive headsets, and its stock plunging over 60% this year.

こうした状況を受けて、株主や投資家の間からは、SNSへの回帰が必要という声が上がっているようです。

Staring down the barrel of a potential recession, Meta should be growing the engagement and revenue of those apps, which have billions of users worldwide.

Instead of angering users by trying to make Instagram more of a TikTok clone, Meta should be spending its time and energy on threading the needle to monetize that usage as much as possible without turning people off.

如何にSNS事業を収益化するかが重要である、（メタバースよりも）そちらに注力すべき、という訳です。

今日は"threading the needle"というフレーズを取り上げます。

針の穴に糸を通す、

to pass a thread through the eye of (a needle)

というのが字句通りの意味で、困難なことを成し遂げるという比喩で使われます。

ところで、「字句通り」と書きましたけれども、英語には針の「穴」とは出てきません。単に"needle"です。

なぜこんなことを言うのかと訝しまれるかもしれませんが、動詞の"thread"自体に、狭い場所などに物を通す、という意味合いがあるからです。

上記の定義は、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryの"thread"の動詞の意味として最初に出てくるものですが、同じく動詞の意味に、

to make one's way through or between

threading narrow alleys

also : to make one's way usually cautiously through a hazardous situation

とあり、こちらもやはり困難な状況下で何とか物事を先に進めようとするという場合の比喩として用いられると解釈できます。
