とあります。他メディアでも、crowd crush、crowd disaster、crush disaster、などの表現が見られます。

一方、以下はロイターの記事ですが、

stampede

という表現を使っています。

"stampede"を辞書で引くと、

大勢が（どっと）押し寄せること、殺到

と載っています。また、動詞としても使われるとあります。

"stampede"の語源欄を見ると、スペイン語estampidaから来ているそうで、estamparというスペイン語の動詞は英語の"stamp"（踏み付ける、足を踏み鳴らす）に同じとありました。

"stampede"という単語の-pedeという語尾が、ラテン語で足を意味するpesから来ているのでは、と想像したのですが、関係はないようです。（"impede"や"centipede"といった単語に見られる-pedeという語尾は、ラテン語pesに由来するものです。）

ソウルの事故で亡くなった方の多くは自らの力ではどうしようもない状況に巻き込まれ、押し合いへし合いの中で圧死したと報道されています。倒れて来る周囲の人から踏みつけにされた被害者もいたようですが、防ぎようは無かったのかと何ともやりきれない気持ちになります。
