週末、米空軍機が米国領空を飛行していた中国の気球をカロライナ沖で撃墜したというニュースが日本国内でもトップニュースで報じられました。

中国側は民間による気象観測の目的であると主張しているそうですが、米側はスパイ活動と断定、やる時はやるんだなぁ、という印象を持ちました。

バイデン大統領はもっと早くに撃墜命令を下すべきだったという批判も米国内にはあるようです。

しかし、最終的に領空侵犯の他国の飛行物体を撃墜したことのメッセージは大きなものがあります。

"one-up"とは、相手より一歩先んじている、優位に立っている、という意味です。スポーツのコンテクストでは1点差で勝っているという意味でも用いられます。

つまり、"one-upmanship"とは、相手よりも優位に立つために一歩先んじること、相手を出し抜く術、を意味します。
