X being X

グーグルで起きたセクハラ事件についての記事を読みました。が、タイトルを読んですぐには飲み込めず、二度読み返しました。

リード部分を読んで大体分かりましたが、いわゆる逆セクハラということのようで、

飲み会の席で酔っ払った女性のボスが、部下男性に言い寄った、

男性は会社の窓口に訴えたものの、聞き届けられず、逆にクビになった、

男性は解雇を不当として裁判に訴えた、

ということです。

Ryan Olohan, 48, accuses Google of firing him after one its top executives, Tiffany Miller, groped him at a Chelsea restaurant in December 2019 and told him she knew he liked Asian women — which Miller is, according to a blockbuster November federal lawsuit filed in Manhattan.

Miller, director of Google’s programmatic media, rubbed Olohan’s abs, complimented his physique, and told him her marriage lacked “spice,” according to court papers.

言うまでもなく、セクハラ被害者は女性に限りません。男性の訴えが真実であるならば、解雇されるべきは加害者である女性の上司であるべきでしょう。

記事中、以下のくだりがあり、被害者の男性は会社に通報すべきか逡巡したようです。

While Olohan, a married father of seven, said he was initially uncomfortable bringing up the incident because many of his colleagues were drunk, his co-workers later chalked up the behavior to “Tiffany being Tiffany,” court papers say.

飲み会の席で多くの同僚が酔っ払っていた、という状況があったことが触れられていますが、問題の女性上司（Tiffany）について、

とあります。

この部分の解釈について少し考えてみたいと思います。

文脈から何となく言いたいことは分かりますね。みんな酔っ払っていたし、あの上司は酔うと（性格変わるんだよなぁ！？）・・・、という感じでしょうか。

“Tiffany being Tiffany”という言い回しは、文字通りにはティファニーはティファニーである（ので）、ということになりますが、ティファニーを知る人が、今回の件は彼女によく見られる言動である、ということを言っているように思われます。

コーパスで幾つか用例を拾ってみました。

"That man is trying to seduce your daughter." "It's just Jeff being Jeff. That's all." Exactly so, Emma thought. Jeff being Jeff. So deeply in love with himself that he cast a spell over other people around him.

辞書には載っていませんが、このフレーズは、

（固有名詞） being （固有名詞）

というパターンであり、固有名詞が指す人について、その人によく見られる、典型的な言動や態度について触れる場合に使われるフレーズだと言って良さそうです。

このフレーズは、"X being X"という分詞構文だと考えられますので、理由を述べる句と考えれば、〜だから、〜ので、と解釈するのが適当でしょう。

問題はどう訳すかですが、〜らしい、〜にありがちな、〜のことだから、等々ありそうですが、コンテクストによりけりでしょうか。
