あおり運転 ー road rage

米・カリフォルニア州で、路上で他人のクルマに鉄パイプのようなもので襲いかかるなどした男が逮捕され、5年の実刑判決を受けたというニュース。

男は電気自動車（EV）のテスラを運転しており、

などとSNS上で呼ばれ、被害者は複数に及び、悪名高かったようです。

道路上でのこうしたトラブルを英語では"road rage"と呼んでいます。

A California man known as the 'Tesla road rage guy' has been sentenced to five years in prison for a series of violent attacks across Southern California.   

Tesla driver Nathaniel Walter Radimak, 36, went on a road rage rampage between 2022 and 2023 that led to several felony convictions including criminal threats, vandalism, assault and elder abuse.

英語の"road rage"は日本語で言うところの「あおり運転」に近いと言います。

「あおり運転」については、日本においても数年前に高速道路上で発生した死亡事故をきっかけに問題視され、厳罰が科されることにもなりました。マスコミを賑わせたあおり運転の一件も記憶に新しいところです。

日本語で「あおり運転」という時、他人のクルマに対して後部から異常に接近したり、幅寄せしたり、もしくは前方に回り込んで無理矢理停止させ、暴言や脅迫紛いの行為に及ぶ事を指しています。

問題の"Tesla road rage guy"は、記事のビデオ映像を見る限り、前方でいきなり停止したかと思ったら、鉄パイプのようなものを持って車外に出、後続のクルマを叩くという恐ろしいもので、気が狂っているのではと思わされる光景です。

"road rage"とは、直訳すれば、道路上（road）での憤り、憤激（rage）、ということで、「煽（あお）る」、「（危険な）運転する」といった具体的行為には言及していないのですが、それらの行為の源には激越した感情があるという点では「あおり運転」に相当する英語ということになるでしょうか。

辞書にも載っていませんが、ニュース記事では"road rage incident"といった記載がよく見かけられ、定着している表現です。

別記事によりますと、全米で最も"road rage"の報告が多いのはイリノイ州だそうです。

Road rage is an experience most drivers have either felt or been on the other end of, but you may be more likely to see it in some states more than others.

That’s according to a new survey from Forbes Advisor which polled 10,000 licensed drivers – 200 from each state – to compare every state in the nation across nine key metrics. Among the metrics were the percentages of drivers report being forced off the road, being yelled at, or another driver leaving their vehicle to fight them.

ここでは、他のクルマに罵声を浴びせることも"road rage"に含まれていますから、感情をコントロールできなドライバーが引き起こす路上トラブル一般を"road rage"と定義付けできるのかなと思います。
