アップルのアイフォーン新機種、iPhone 15では充電ケーブルのポートにUSB Type Cを採用することが決まったそうです。

変更の背景にはEUの規制が変更されたことがあるようです。従来型のLightening cableからの変更となりますが、アイフォーンのユーザーからは困惑の声も上がっている模様です。

Apple is switching the iPhone from its proprietary Lightning port to USB-C, and people are going to be really, really angry.

Thanks to the EU, Apple has been forced to adopt the USB-C standard for charging and data transfer for the iPhone 15, replacing the Lightning connector that has been around since 2012. And in those 11 years, people have collected a lot of Lightning cables.

今日は、"work up"という表現を取り上げました。

先に「ユーザーが困惑」と書きましたが、記事のタイトルでは、

(people are) getting worked up over…

であり、また本文は、

people are going to be really, really angree

とあります。

"work up"という動詞句の意味ですが、

To arouse the emotion of; excite

(American Heritage Dictionary)

ということであり、意味合いとしては"agitate"に近いように思います。

現在使われているLightening cableは2012年に導入されたものですが、10年以上、アイフォーンではこのケーブルが必需品としてほぼ定着していると言えます。

電子機器類の標準やメーカー独自の規格というものにユーザーは振り回されてきた歴史があると思いますが、今回も同じ構図であり、ユーザーのフラストレーションはそこにあると言って良いでしょう。

小生も自宅にも、被覆が摩耗して使わなくなったものも含めると4〜5本あります。新機種を購入する予定はありませんが。
