バイデン米大統領の次男ハンター・バイデン氏は先日、銃の違法所持で起訴されました。

二期目の大統領選出馬を表明している父親のバイデン氏に逆風となるという見方が先日の邦紙でも取り上げられていました。高齢に加えて大統領選の争点となるのは必定のように思われます。

次男を巡る様々なスキャンダルには頭を痛めているようです。バイデン大統領は長男を亡くしており、ただ一人の子であるハンター氏の行く末に親としての心配が尽きないというところかとも思われます。

大統領といえども一人の子の親、側近は子煩悩なバイデン氏を見ることもしばしばと思われます。

恐らくは大統領に近い人物のコメントと思われる発言が引用されています。

“Everybody walks around on eggshells in the West Wing”

とのコメントですが、"walk on eggshells"とは、機微に触れるような話題などについて、なるべく相手を刺激することの無いよう、言動に細心の注意を払う、というような意味です。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは、

If you are walking on eggshells or are walking on eggs, you are very careful about what you say or do because you do not want to upset or offend someone, even though you think they are being over-sensitive.

と説明されています。

"tread on eggs"とも言うようです。

卵にしろ、その殻にしろ、割れやすい物の上を歩くのには慎重を要する、ということですね。
