医学の進歩により、がん（癌）に罹っても治る時代になったとも言われますが、怖いのは難治性のがんや進行の速いガンです。

特にすい臓がん（pancreatic cancer）は予後が悪いと言われます。オーストラリアではすい臓がんの症例が増加しているそうで、自覚症状のないまま進行した結果手遅れになることも多く、サイレントキラーと呼ばれ恐れられています。

すい臓がん症例の増加はここ数年急増したそうで、大腸がん、肺がんについで3番目に多いそうです。

記事のくだりで、

とあります。

"vault"という単語はアーチ形（の天井や空間）のことだとご存知でしょう。

ここでは動詞で用いられていますが、跳ぶ、跳ねる、跳躍する、といった意味です。

膵臓がんは死者数において6番目という統計であったのが、この数年で3番目になったということなのです。

引用した記事のような用例においては、

（ある物に）他の物を飛び越えさせる、凌駕りょうがさせる、（・・・に）一気に押し上げる

という意味があります。

アーチを意味する名詞の"vault"、それから跳躍するという意味の動詞の"vault"は、意味的にも似通っているようにも思えることから、ひとつの単語かと思いましたが、辞書のエントリは分かれており、一応別の単語の扱いになっています。

語源としてはラテン語volvere（to turn, roll）に遡るというところは共通しているのですが、英語に入ってきたタイミングと経緯が異なるようです。
