glow up

唐突ですが、"glow up"（glow-up）という表現をご存知でしょうか？

まずは以下の引用をお読みください。多分意味するところは想像が付くかと思います。

The summer travel season means people are scrambling to renew their passports with many embellishing their photos so they look more flattering. However, experts have warned against these photo “glow-ups” on the grounds that they could make it more difficult for flyers to navigate immigration checkpoints.

“If you overly-enhance your look when taking your photo, you can actually slow down the process of verification checks at the airport,” warned Gemma Brown, the Head of Product at the UK travel site Travel Republic.

顔写真の話ですが、"embellish(ing)"や"look more flattering"といった表現か使われていることからもお分かりのように、"glow up"とは見た目を良くする、といったような意味合いで使われていると考えられます。

"glow"という動詞には輝くという意味がありますから、"glow up"という表現もこのような動詞の意味に根ざしているのかなと思ったのですが、実のところSNSで若い人達が使う俗語表現なんだそうです。

正統派（?!）の辞書には載っていないのですが、ネットで検索するとZ世代のスラングという紹介がされているものが目に付きます。

いくつか拾い読みした中で、分かりやすい定義としては以下のようなものがありました。

Glow up is an informal term for a positive personal transformation, typically one involving significant changes in appearance and style and often also growth in confidence and maturity (and sometimes aspects of personal or professional life).

SNSのプロフィール写真を始め、若い人達が如何に自身を映えるように見せるか腐心しているというのは想像されるところです。

若い人に限らず、見た目の印象を「盛る」というのは現代人の本能かも知れません。

この"glow up"という表現は"grow (up)"（成長する）という言葉にも掛けられており、上記引用の定義にもありますように、外面だけでなく、内面の成熟といったことも含む概念だということです。

"glo up"というスペルもあるそうです。
