on the sly

今日取り上げる表現は、"on the sly"という慣用表現です。意味は、

こそこそと、内証で、秘密に（secretly）

というものです。

アメリカ人は概してDIYが好きなようです。小生の友人も、昨年自宅を訪問した折、室内の壁を自分で塗ったとか、半地下の物置き部屋を改装したとか言っておりました。

ところで小生がこの記事に関心を覚えたのは、DIYを相方に相談せず、「こっそり」（on the sly）やろうとする、という話に覚えがあるからです。

郊外に自宅を新築して17年というところですが、小生の知らぬうちに家屋内、庭、ガレージ、等々、様々な改変が施されてきました。

アメリカ人のそれとはスケールは違いますが、結構なコストがかかっており、何故相談も無く？と正直なところ思います。

記事によれば、同意無くDIYを進める人というのは特定の星座（zodiac signs）が関係しているということなのですが、これが的中しています（！？）
