on the up and up

今年3月にがんであることを公表した英国のキャサリン妃が、化学療法を終えたと公表しました。SNSに投稿されたビデオメッセージでは治療に一区切りがついた安堵を吐露したということです。

その後、公の場に姿を現したウィリアム王子の様子を報じた記事から引用しました。王子は髭をたくわえ（治癒の願掛けでしょうか？）、にこやかな様子であったとあります。

An unshaven Prince William stepped out for his first public appearance since Kate Middleton revealed she had completed her cancer treatment.

The Prince of Wales, 42, greeted fans while rocking his new beard with a big smile on his face outside of the Swiss Valley Primary School in Llanelli, Wales, on Tuesday.

“It’s good news, but there is still a long way to go,” he told one person of his wife’s prognosis.

Several royal watchers sent along their well-wishes during the visit, expressing to William how happy they were to hear that the Princess of Wales’ health was on the up and up.

英王室を見守る人々らは王子に対して、キャサリン妃が回復したことへの祝意を表したということなのですが、記事のくだりで、

the Princess of Wales’ health was on the up and up

という部分があります。

ここで使われている"on the up and up"という表現を初めて見ます。"up"が2度出て来ますが、ひょっとして（電子媒体ではよくある）タイポか？と思ったくらいです。

が、これはれっきとした慣用表現で、"up and up"という言い回しは英和辞書にも載っています。

研究社新英和大辞典では、

進捗、成功；正直な生活

うまく行って、成功して、上向いて

正直な、公明正大な

とあります。

コンテクストにより意味が違ってくるのだと思いますが、ここではキャサリン妃のがん治療がうまく行き、健康を取り戻したということを言っているものだと解釈されます。

"up-and-up"のようにハイフンで繋げる場合もあるようです。

日本語の「あっぷ、あっぷ」とは意味が違いますね。
