偽ブランド品や模造品のことを指す単語に"knockoff"という単語があり以前取り上げました。引用記事でも使われていますが、また別の表現として、

fugazi

という単語が使われています。これは初めて見る単語です。手元にある英和辞書には載っていないようですが、Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン版）には興味深い語源解説と共に載っています。

解説によれば、この単語はイタリア人の姓Fugazziから来ているという説があるそうです。Fugazziファミリーはいわゆるイタリア系アメリカ人で、ニューヨークでリムジンサービスの会社を興したそうですが、詐欺的な広告や商売で悪評が高かったということです。故に、"fugazi"は詐欺、偽物といったネガティブな意味で使われるようになったというものなのですが、語源的な根拠としてはやや不十分との補足があります。Fugazzi一家（子孫がまだ続いているとすれば）には甚だ不名誉な話でしょう。

また、別の説明には、ベトナム戦争時に米軍人間のスラングに由来するというものがあり、

fucked up, got ambushed, zipped in (a body bag)

の頭文字で"fugazi"という、これまたやや眉唾物のような話もあるそうです。
