ラインストーン（rhinestone）とは、ガラスや水晶などを素材にした模造の宝石のことを言います。

英単語の"rhinestone"はフランス語のcaillou du Rhinを置き換えたものであるとの辞書の説明があります。"Rhin"（Rhine）とはヨーロッパを流れるライン川のことです。

ライン川で採れた石という意味で、17世紀頃にフランスのストラスブールで、ライン川の石を素材に作った模造宝飾に起源があるそうです。これをビジネスにしたのがGeorg Friedrich Strassという職人で、その宝飾はフランス王室御用達であったとか。

この"rhinestone"は今日では服飾、特に華やかなステージ衣装などで多用されています。
