来年の大統領選指名候補に名乗りをあげているデサンティス・フロリダ州知事に、同州に本拠地を置くプロバスケットチームが5万ドルの献金を行ったそうですが、批判の声が高まっています。

The Orlando Magic’s decision to donate money to a Ron DeSantis super PAC was "difficult to stomach" for a CNN sports anchor on Friday.

Rachel Nichols, who previously anchored with ESPN, spoke about the recent news that Orlando Magic LTD donated $50,000 to Never Back Down Inc., which describes itself as a "grassroots movement to elect Governor Ron DeSantis for President in 2024."

From her 25 years of NBA experience, Nichols claimed to "CNN Tonight" host Jim Acosta that she had "never seen" a political donation like this that "was made on behalf of the team."

政治家にプロスポーツ団体が献金するというのはあまり聞いたことがありません。

今回の件に関しても、チームメンバー個人の政治信条を無視したものという批判があります。チームのファンに対しても同様のことが言えるように思われます。

記事ではCNNのアンカーによる批判が取り上げられていますが、

difficult to stomach

とある部分の"stomach"はここで動詞として使われており、"accept"、"endure"の意味です。

"stomach"の名詞の意味はご存知のように、内臓器官としての胃であり、おなか（腹）のことですね。

日本語でも、腹に据えかねる、とか腑に落ちない、という表現がありますが、英語でも理解や納得にかかるメタファーは腹部なんですね。

junta

先日、ニュースのヘッドラインで、外務省がニジェール首都に渡航中止勧告、という見出しを見かけたので何事かと思っていたら、西アフリカのニジェールでクーデターが発生したということでした。

現職大統領は監禁され、クーデターを主導した軍政が実権支配している状況です。

現職のバズム大統領は民主的な選挙を経て選出された大統領であり、米、仏などはクーデター主導者を批判しています。

記事に、

junta

という言葉が出てきます。

これは、クーデター直後の暫定政府、臨時政府、といった意味の単語で、つまり今回クーデターを主導した側のことを指します。

スペイン語からの借用語なのですが、ラテン語jungere（英語でjoinの意味）から来ています。

借用語の発音に関してですが、英語では、外来語からの借用であっても英語式の発音になることが多いです。

"junta"も、最初はカタカナで「ジャンタ」のような発音でしたが、スペイン語式に「フーンタ」という発音が優勢になったとされます。（American Heritage Dictionary）

bogus

ワシントンの連邦議事堂に銃を持った人がいるという通報を受けて、警察が約200人体制で出動するという騒動があったと報じられています。

警察当局は議事堂の建物内、周辺をくまなく捜査しましたが、犯人も不審な点も見当たらず、「いたずら電話」だったと結論し、警戒を解除した、とあります。

「いたずら電話」と訳しましたが、記事での英語は、

a bogus call

です。

"bogus"という形容詞ですが、

偽物の、いんちきの

という意味です。

語源欄を見ると、"bogus"とは19世紀頃の偽造貨幣を作る機械を指す名称だったそうで、そこから生じた形容表現だということです。

ストロボ ー strobe

ツイッターが名称をX（エックス）に変更したという話題はつい先日も取り上げました。

ネット上では改名について賛否両論（どちらかと言うと否定の意見が多いようですが）が展開されています。小生のケータイのアプリも青い鳥のアイコンは真っ黒な背景のXに置き換わり、漏れなく名称変更が反映され始めた模様です。

サンフランシスコの本社ではTwitterという社名の看板が降ろされ、代わって巨大なXという文字のサイネージが同社屋上に設置されたとメディアで取り上げられています。

ところが、この新しいサイネージが頗る不評らしく、また市当局の必要な許可を得てないといったことで、早くも取り外されたということです。

周辺で生活する人に不評で、市には複数の苦情が寄せられたとあります。単純にアルファベット一文字のサイネージが苦情を申し立てるほど酷いというのが今一つ分からなかったのですが、記事のビデオを見て合点が行きました。

夜間映像なのですが、屋上のXのサイネージは燦然と光り輝くのみならず、周期的に照明パターンを変化させるようになっており、時に激しく明滅を繰り返しています。まるで、日本のパチンコ屋（！？）を彷彿とさせるのですが、これは苦情になってもおかしくないと思いました。

さて、前置きが長くなってしまいましたが、記事で、

とある部分です。

"strobing"というのは、カタカナで言うところの「ストロボ」を指しているんですね。

"strobe"というのがそのスペルですが、"stroboscope"、"strobe lightning"を短くした単語ということになっています。そして、それが動詞としての意味、

To emit intense flashes of light in rapid succession

(American Heritage Dictionary)

で使われているものです。

ところで、"stroboscope"というのは、我々がストロボと呼んでいる、強い周期的な光を高速回転する物体に当てて観察する装置やそのような照明を指すものですが、strob-という部分はギリシャ語で回転すること、渦を巻くことを意味するstrobosから来ているんですね。

ギリシャ語から遡ること印欧祖語streb(h)-は、ストロボ以外にも、

apostrophe

catastrophe

といった単語につながっており、これらの単語には向きを変えるとか捻る、といった意味合いが含まれているんですね。

電気自動車（EV）メーカーとして市場を席巻するテスラ。

同社の株価は上昇を続け、今年のはじめから倍以上に高騰しています。この勢いで行くと、同社の規模はアップルやグーグル、アマゾンなど、名だたるトップ企業に追い付き、はたまた追い越すのではないかと言われているそうです。

引用した記事は、テスラの勢いが、株式時価総額2兆ドルを越すと言われるグーグル（Alphabet）、アマゾン、Nvidiaに並び、さらには追い越す可能性について触れています。

結論として、あり得ないことではないが、当面は無さそう、ということなのですが、後段では以下のように記載されています。

ここで使われている"leapfrog"を辞書で引くと、「馬跳び」とあります。子供の頃にやったことがありますね。両手を膝に当てて背中を丸めたところを後ろから来た人が飛び越え、同じように背中を丸め、後ろからまた人が飛び越えて行く、ということを次々に繰り返すものです。

比喩的には「抜きつ抜かれつ」ということなのですが、動詞としては

To advance or progress beyond (a competitor or an obstacle, for example) in dramatic fashion

とありますように、競合を凌いで先頭に躍り出る、躍進する、出し抜く、といった訳語が近いようです。

日本語では馬、英語では"frog〜"なのでカエル、という違いがあるようですが、馬跳びのことを「蛙跳び」と呼ぶ地方もあるそうです。
