電気自動車（EV）メーカーとして市場を席巻するテスラ。

同社の株価は上昇を続け、今年のはじめから倍以上に高騰しています。この勢いで行くと、同社の規模はアップルやグーグル、アマゾンなど、名だたるトップ企業に追い付き、はたまた追い越すのではないかと言われているそうです。

Google parent Alphabet (GOOG 0.07%) (GOOGL 0.11%), Amazon (AMZN 1.11%), and Nvidia (NVDA -0.04%) rank as the closest contenders to join the $2 trillion club. But could Tesla (TSLA 0.37%) beat them to the punch?

結論として、あり得ないことではないが、当面は無さそう、ということなのですが、後段では以下のように記載されています。

ここで使われている"leapfrog"を辞書で引くと、「馬跳び」とあります。子供の頃にやったことがありますね。両手を膝に当てて背中を丸めたところを後ろから来た人が飛び越え、同じように背中を丸め、後ろからまた人が飛び越えて行く、ということを次々に繰り返すものです。

比喩的には「抜きつ抜かれつ」ということなのですが、動詞としては

To advance or progress beyond (a competitor or an obstacle, for example) in dramatic fashion

(American Heritage Dictionary)

とありますように、競合を凌いで先頭に躍り出る、躍進する、出し抜く、といった訳語が近いようです。

日本語では馬、英語では"frog〜"なのでカエル、という違いがあるようですが、馬跳びのことを「蛙跳び」と呼ぶ地方もあるそうです。
