英国キャサリン妃が男児を出産 ― deliver

英国キャサリン妃が無事男の子を出産しました。世界中でトップニュースになっています。

今日取り上げたいのは、"deliver"という動詞です。わざわざ取り上げる意味は何？という方もあるかも知れません。

"deliver"って、“出産する”という意味の他動詞でしょ、という方、以下の引用を読んでみて下さい。


The Duchess had been in labour for more than 11 hours but both she and the baby were said to be “doing well” as they prepared to spend tonight in hospital.

（中略）

The news finally came at 8.29pm, with the formal announcement that “The Duchess of Cambridge has been delivered of a son”.

上記の引用で、


The Duchess of Cambridge has been delivered of a son.


というイギリス王室の公式発表が引用されていますが、"(has) been delivered"と受身形になっているのを見て、おや、と思いました。

つまり、


The Duchess of Cambridge has delivered a son.


の間違いではないかと思ったのです。

結論から言いますと、上記２つのどちらも文法的には正しいのですが、"(has) been delivered of (a son)"という受身形の表現は文語として、どちらかと言えば古風な言い回しになるそうです。

先日の投稿で、赤ちゃん誕生はバッキンガム宮殿の前に設置されるイーゼルで公表されるという記事を取り上げましたが、今回の報道の中でもこのイーゼルが写真で取り上げられております。

写真から読み取るに、


Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4:24 pm today.

Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.


とあり、ここでも"deliver"は受身形となっています。
