weasel word

"weasel word"は、逃げ口上、と訳されています。わざと遠まわしな言い方をしたり、曖昧な表現を使うやり方、とされています。

"weasel"というのはイタチのことです。なぜイタチの言葉が「逃げ口上」になるのかというと、イタチは鳥の卵を捕食する際に、卵の殻は傷つけずに中身だけを吸い取って、あたかも卵には何事も無かったかのようにして欺くからなのだそうです。

つまり、言葉の表現を巧みに、つまり遠まわしな言い方や曖昧な表現を使うことで後になって言い逃れできるように、言わんとするところの意味の本質的な部分（中身）は抜き取って、上辺だけを繕うことを喩えているのです。


Mr. Buchanan still likes to poke people in the nose and kick them where he thinks it might do some good. He just uses words now. Certainly, his strength is that he offers no weasel words. He says things that many Americans believe but are reluctant to say except in the privacy of their own homes. この"weasel word"という表現は1900年代になってから見られたものらしく、次第に政治（politics）のコンテクストで頻繁に用いられるようになったようです。

勿論、曖昧な言葉で自身への責任追求を免れようとするずるい政治家のことを言うのに使われるようになったものです。
