今日は朝刊がお休みだったのですが、インターネットでの国際関係のトップニュースはシリア関係のものでした。

シリアが反体制派に対して化学兵器を用いたと思われる攻撃を行い、幼い子供を含む多数の死傷者が出ているとのことです。

トランプ大統領が早速ツイッターで反応し、アサド大統領や同氏を支持しているロシアのプーチン大統領らを名指しで非難しました。


President Trump warned there would be a “big price to pay” for a deadly chemical weapons attack in Syria, and called out Russian President Vladimir Putin by name Sunday for backing the leadership believed to have been behind the atrocious assault.

Trump, in a foreign policy Twitter tirade, also took swipes at Iran and President Obama for allowing the lengthy civil war to take such a gruesome turn, as the administration mulls a slew of responses.

“Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria,” Trump tweeted Sunday morning.

“Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad.”

との表現です。

ネットで配信されているAFPの記事では「けだもの」と訳されていました。

理性を持つ人間と対比しての”animal”は、例えばAmerican Heritage Dictionaryでは下記のように定義されています。


A human considered with respect to his or her physical nature, as opposed to rational or spiritual nature.


相手を侮蔑するこのような表現は文法用語では「軽侮語」（pejorative）と呼ばれます。

ところで「アニマル」と聞くと、かつて我々日本人は米国などから「エコノミックアニマル」などと揶揄されたことがありました。高度経済成長期のことです。

この「エコノミックアニマル」の”animal”については先述の”animal”とは少し定義は異なるようで、


A person having a specified aptitude or set of interests
(American Heritage Dictionary)


が相当すると思われます。

ちなみに、”animal”の語源はラテン語で呼吸や精神を意味するanimaに由来します。Merriam-Webster Dictionaryの解説によれば、呼吸をしている存在が”animal”ということです。
