A MEMBER of the Skaf rape gang, who served 14 years in prison over the gang’s attacks on two female teenagers in 2000, refuses to say he is sorry for his crime.

婦女暴行犯の男が14年の刑期を終えて出所したようですが、被害者女性に対する謝罪がない、というような内容です。
本人の発言が引用されていて、
Mate what am I sorry about?
とあるのですが、この"mate"というのに引っかかりました。
これは恐らくオーストラリア英語特有の言い回しなのだろうと思って少々調べてみたところ、やはりそのようです。
実際、オーストラリア人は会話の中で"mate"という言葉を多用するようで、特に男性が同性の相手に対して、話しかける場合に用いられるようです。
引用した記事の例だと、男がメディアの関係者に対して馴れ馴れしく話しかけている感じが出ています。
若いころにカナダに、20年ほど前にオーストラリアに住んでいました。北米では普通に使われる drug store, cotton candyなどオーストラリアの方々には面白いようでした。
返信削除私が一番戸惑ったのはゴミの出し方についてオーストラリアの人に聞いたところ、pavementにゴミの箱を出して置くように言われた事でした。ん～？saidewalkではなく舗装してある車が走る道路、pavementに出したら危ないのでは？と聞いたところオーストラリアでは歩道はpavementと呼ぶと言われ ビックリ仰天。
