Cops put skids on Qld footpath defecator

A jogger who allegedly repeatedly pooped on a footpath outside a Brisbane unit complex has been caught with his pants down by a vigilante with a camera.

The 64-year-old man from Greenslopes has been charged with public nuisance for allegedly defecating on private property after being videoed by a resident.

The man, who was arrested when police confronted him at an address on Logan Road on Sunday night, will face Holland Park Magistrates Court on June 4.

記事のタイトルで見慣れない表現が使われています。


put skids on...


という表現ですが、"skid"を辞書で引くとこのフレーズが載っており、


（人を）破滅させる、失敗させる、ドジを踏ませる


とありました。

ところで、"skid"って何のことでしょうか？ランダムハウス英和では、


（重い物の下に敷いて転がす）丸太、ころ


という説明が1番目に載っていたので、合点が行きました。

"put skids on..."が人を目的語に取り、失敗させる、という意味になるのは、恐らく丸太に乗ったら滑って転倒してしまうからでしょう。

ちなみに、"hit the skids"という成句もあるそうで、こちらは”落ち目になる”という意味で、やはり同様のイメージから来ていると思われました。
