考えてみると、この単語は面白いと思いました。


FALMOUTH – Three people were injured in a rear-end collision in Falmouth around 1 PM. The crash happened on Nathan Ellis Highway (Route 151) at Fordham Road. The injured were taken to Falmouth Hospital for evaluation. Falmouth Police are investigating.

引用した記事で、"rear-ender"という単語はタイトルで使われているのですが、本文中は、"rear-end collision"であり、"rear-end"は形容詞的な扱いです。

この"rear-end collision"を短縮したものが、"rear-ender"だと解釈できますが、よく知られた接尾辞-erを付けたものということになります。

ご存知のように、接尾辞の-erは「～する人」のように、名詞や動詞に付いて、動作主や行為者を意味するケースが圧倒的に多い中、"rear-ender"は事故を指しており、ちょっと異色の存在と言えそうです。

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — Police are investigating whether a Tesla sedan’s semi-autonomous Autopilot feature was engaged when it rear-ended a fire department truck in Utah.

The Tesla Model S crashed into the truck at 60 mph (97 kph) apparently without braking before impact, according to police in South Jordan, a suburb of Salt Lake City. The fire department mechanic truck had been stopped at a red light.
