call the shots

自身のスキャンダルにより再選が危ぶまれていたカナダのトルドー首相ですが、先日の選挙で勝利し、再選を果たしました。

尤も、議会の過半数を獲得することは出来ず、今後は難しい政権運営を余儀なくされるという見方がもっぱらですが、今朝読んだポリティコ紙の記事では具体的な事例に触れていました。

最近になってカナダでは"Wexit"なる造語が流行り始めたようです。

ご想像の通り、"Brexit"や"Grexit"に引っ掛けたもので、カナダの西部の州がカナダ本国から離脱するということを、どこまで本気なのかはさておき、議論しているようです。

アルバータ州など、西部は保守派の地盤であるのに対して、トルドー首相を始めとするリベラル勢力は東部を押さえており、対立構図を生んでいます。

記事の引用部分では、

というくだりがあります。

ここで、"call the shots"とは、采配を振るう、牛耳る、という意味の慣用句です。（"call the tune"という表現もあり、同じ意味です。）

石油資源を担っている西部の州から見れば、地球温暖化対策を声高に叫ぶリベラル派による支配は腹に据えかねるものがあるのでしょう。
