岸田内閣発足 ― a stabilizing hand

自民党総裁選は岸田文雄氏が勝利し、昨日、第100代総理大臣に就任、岸田内閣がスタートしました。

日本の新しいリーダーの人となりが海外からも注目を集める訳ですが、岸田総理について、

A moderate liberal regarded as a stabilizing hand,

と表現されているところ、"a stabilizing hand"とはどういう意味なのか、何と訳したものか、少し考えさせられました。

"stabilize"は安定させる、という意味ですから、パンデミックで混乱する社会、経済を立て直して安定化させることを期待されていることを言わんとしているのだろうと想像がつきます。

"hand"はどうでしょうか。人手、また職工や、技能を持った専門家を指して用いられることがあります。また、権力、支配力といった意味もあります。

やはり岸田総理に求められている資質、期待されている役割は、安定をもたらすことに長けた能力ということなのでしょうか。

岸田内閣は発足10日後に解散、今月末投開票の衆院総選挙となりますが、果たして・・・。
