"on the back burner"という表現があります。"burner"というのは、ガスストーブの火口のことを言いますが、調理器具のコンロをイメージすると分かりやすいでしょう。

"back burner"は手前にあるバーナーに対して、奥の方にあるバーナーです。よって、差し当たっては調理しないで少しの間除けておくための場所ということです。
