8 ball

先週、米大統領官邸（ホワイトハウス）のウエストウィングでコカインが発見されたという事件で、シークレットサービスは捜査の終結を発表しました。

発見時は現場からの一時退避措置がとられる騒ぎだったようですが、一般見学者もアクセスできるというエリアの監視カメラ映像解析やコカインが入っていた袋の指紋採取も、犯人の特定には至らなかったようです。

The White House is the most secure place on the planet, crawling with feds and fitted to the doorstops with video and other surveillance tech all aimed at keeping the world’s most powerful man safe. 

Yet we’re somehow supposed to believe the men and women charged with protecting the president can’t find out who dropped an 8-ball in the West Wing? 

No. Way. In. Hell.

It’s the White House, not a rest-stop Arby’s bathroom.

麻薬物の名称には隠語、俗語が付き物です。

コカイン（cocaine）を"coke"と言うことはよく知られていると思いますが、記事中、

8-ball

ともあります。

"8-ball" (eight ball) の数字「8」は実は、eighth (one-eighth) のことだそうです。つまり、8分の1を指すのですが、何の8分の1かというと、1オンスの8分の1（3〜3.5ミリグラム）ということです。恐らくはこのような少量で取り引きされることが多い麻薬物を指す代名詞のようになったものと思われ、"8 ball"と言う場合、コカインに限らず他の麻薬物も指すようです。

Merriam-Websterオンラインによれば、初出は1980年代だそうで、比較的最近の俗語ということになります。
