日本のお正月は、元日に発生した能登半島の地震で、正月気分は吹き飛んでしまったかのようです。

自然災害は時と場所を選んではくれません。昨日の地震さえ無ければ、穏やかなお正月が続いていたことでしょう。被災地の無事を祈るばかりです。

年が明けて世界各地の年越しの様子を伝える記事を目にするようになりました。以下はニューヨークの年越しの様子を伝える記事からの引用です。

With over one million people in attendance at the New Year's Eve celebrations in New York City's Time Square – the biggest party in the city required an extra large clean-up crew.

"Every year, this holiday gives people an opportunity to begin anew and start with a clean slate. To that end, DSNY is proud to deliver a clean street, right here in Times Square," said Commissioner Tisch in a statement.

記事のタイトルに目を引かれた訳ですが、NYCの年越しでは10万ポンド（約45トン）の"confetti"が撒かれ、その清掃におおわらわ、という内容です。

年越しの馬鹿騒ぎの様子が想起されます。"confetti"とあるのを読んで、お菓子が空から降ってきたのかと思いましたが、ここでの"confetti"は紙吹雪の意味で、記事の写真に見る路上に散乱した色とりどりの紙片はお菓子の包み紙ではなく、紙吹雪なのでした。

ところで、"confetti"は元々はお菓子のことで、イタリア語から来ています。イタリアではカーニバルなどのお祭りでキャンディなどのお菓子を撒くのです。

イタリア語ということは当然その源流はラテン語にあり、"confetti"とは接頭辞con-、作るという意味の動詞ficereから成ります。砂糖などの材料を混ぜて作るのが"confetti"です。

砂糖をまぶしたお菓子と言えば日本の金平糖ですが、こちらはポルトガル語が語源とされますが、ラテン語としては同根です。

ケーキ屋さんの看板に"confectionery"という単語を見ることがよくありますが、この"confectionery"や"confection"という単語も同じ語源です。
