consort

Queen Elizabeth II offered her support Saturday to have the Duchess of Cornwall become Queen Camilla — using a special Platinum Jubilee message to make a significant decision in shaping the future of the British monarchy.

In remarks delivered on the eve of the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne, the monarch expressed a "sincere wish" that Camilla be known as "Queen Consort" when her eldest son Charles, the Prince of Wales, succeeds her as expected to the throne. In giving her blessing, the popular and respected sovereign is placing significant heft behind the move.

"When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes king, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me," the monarch wrote. "And it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service."
(Queen backs plan to one day call son’s wife 'Queen Camilla'. Fox News. February 5, 2022.)

"Queen Consort"

There have been a lot of emotions this week around the New York Times’s seven-figure acquisition of the word deduction game, Wordle — especially on Twitter. The reactions range from frustration to glee to snark.

The game has become a ritual for the millions who play it daily. Our brains crave the pattern-seeking custom Wordle humbly provides, helping it become a perfect pandemic game. The interface is simple, free from ads and has a heartwarming origin story.

But what does the future hold for Wordle? The Times says the game will “initially remain free to new and existing players.” But it’s not clear what the time frame for “initially” really is, and some have theorized that the game will eventually end up behind The Times’s paywall.
(Rachel Orr. Worried Wordle may go behind a paywall? Here are 8 alternatives. The Washington Post. February 3, 2022.)

the game will eventually end up behind The Times’s paywall

a system that prevents Internet users from accessing certain Web content without a paid subscription

comp(s)

Reduced international travel and low traffic to office buildings weighed on Starbucks' same-store sales in China, CEO Kevin Johnson said Wednesday.

"Our stores that are in airports in the international travel terminals are closed, so clearly that's weighing on comps," Johnson said on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street." "Stores that are in office districts are much slower than they used to be."

He added that cafes in residential and commercial zones are seeing same-store sales growth, a positive sign for demand in the country. However, it isn't enough to offset declines elsewhere. The coffee chain reported Tuesday that its same-store sales in China shrank by 14% in its fiscal first quarter. The country is Starbucks' second-largest market, trailing only the U.S.
(Amelia Lucas. Starbucks CEO says airport cafe closures, low traffic to offices weighed on Chinese sales. CNBC. February 2, 2022.)

clearly that's weighing on comps

Comparable sales in the U.S. jumped by 18%, primarily driven by a 12% gain in transactions and a 6% increase in the average ticket size. In China, the company surpassed 5,500 stores, pushing its global store count to 34,317 in total.

However, the zero COVID-policy in the world's second largest economy took a toll. Comparable store sales tumbled by 14%, driven by a 9% decline in average ticket and a 6% decline in transactions.

buck up

Metro is digging deeper into its pocketbook in an effort to hire more bus drivers.

As with many other employers, the transit agency has been facing a staffing shortage during the pandemic, so Metro is offering up to $2,500 in incentives to fill nearly 70 positions.

“Metrobus is essential to the economic well-being of the region, connecting people to jobs, hospitals, stores and other activities. None of this would be possible without our bus operators,” Metro General Manager and CEO Paul Wiedefeld said in a statement Tuesday.
(Jack Pointer. Metro bucks up with incentives to attract new bus drivers. WTOP. February 1, 2022.)

Metro bucks up with incentives to attract new bus drivers

以前取り上げた、"pass the buck"、"the buck stops at…"

President Biden met with Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, the emir of Qatar, at the White House on Monday and told him he's strengthening the U.S. alliance with the kingdom as the West faces a potential energy crisis if Russia invades Ukraine and cuts off gas supply to Europe.

"Qatar is a good friend and reliable partner," Biden said. "And I'm notifying Congress that I will designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally to reflect the importance of the importance of our relationship."
(Jon Brown. Biden receives emir of Qatar, strengthens alliance amid fears Russia will close gas spigot to Europe. Fox News. January 31, 2022.)

emir
