女性の中絶の権利を巡っては、米国においては国を二分する問題となっていますが、フランスにおいては、中絶の権利が憲法で認められることになったと先日報じられました。

France made history on Monday as the first country in the world to enshrine the right to abortion in its constitution.

In a special session held at the Palace of Versailles, parliament passed the bill, which had already been adopted by the National Assembly in January and the Senate on Wednesday, with an overwhelming vote of 780-72. Parliament had to put a final stamp of approval at the joint session on Monday for it to officially go into effect, reported AP.

The amendment to Article 34 of the French Constitution states that “the law determines the conditions by which is exercised the freedom of women to have recourse to an abortion, which is guaranteed.” Abortion has been legal in France since 1975 and is overwhelmingly supported by the French population, according to polls.

とありますように、憲法で中絶の権利を認めるのは世界で初めてということです。

そして、このタイトル、また記事中で使われている、

という動詞を取り上げたいと思います。

単語のスペルからお分かりのように、"shrine"、即ち神社という単語に接頭辞en-が付いたものとなっており、動詞としての意味は、

宮に納める、祭る

というものです。

が、ここでの意味合いは、

明文化する、明記する

というものであり、国内でも、女性の中絶の権利が世界で初めて憲法に明文化された、と報道されています。

研究社新英和大辞典はこのような意味を載せていませんが、ランダムハウス英和辞書には載っていました。

ところで、"shrine"という単語はラテン語scriniumに遡るとされ、その意味は文庫、本や書類を入れる箱、というものです。

そこから、"shrine"とは聖人などの遺物、また遺骨などを大切に保管する場所、つまり聖廟や神社を指す言葉になったとされます。

さて、"enshrine"という動詞に戻りますと、やはり"shrine"ですから、聖なるものとして厳かに取り扱うというニュアンスがあるかと思います。

憲法の内容を軽々しく変更したりはしませんから、"enshrine"（明文化）される対象にはそれなりの重みがあることが前提となっていると思われます。

コーパスで検索してみると、

などとは言わないようです。つまり、それなりの格がある文書でないと使えないようです。

ニューヨークと言えば摩天楼、摩天楼と言えばエンパイアスタートビルディング、です。

そのエンパイアステートビルのすぐそばに建設中のタワーが物議を醸しているそうです。

54階建て、860フィート（約262メートル）を超す高級マンションだそうですが、5番街から見えるエンパイアステートビルを遮るように聳え立ち、近隣住民や旅行客を憤慨させているというのです。

苦痛を与える、心をうづかせる、苛む、という意味なのですが、この単語の語源には興味深いものがあります。

スペルはRで始まりますが、遡るとラテン語dracunculusに辿り着き、これは小さな蛇という意味だそうです。

ラテン語dracoが蛇、または竜（dragon）を意味するのですが、小さな蛇（あるいは竜）が人を憤慨させる、苦痛を与える、という意味になるのは不思議ですね。

ここに語源の妙味と言いますか、面白さがあるんですが、小さな蛇というのはそれこそ蛇に噛まれてできた傷、また化膿したり腫れたりした部分を言ったものなんだそうです。ミミズ腫れのようになった傷から小さな蛇の姿を連想したものとか。

そこから動詞rankleは、化膿した傷のように苦痛を与える、うづくような不快を与える、という意味になったということです。

そう言えば今年は辰年でしたね。

myopia

スマホを始めとする、デジタル端末の使用時間が増えるに従い、目の不調に悩まされる若者の数も急増しているとの記事を読みました。

自然光によらず、デジタル端末の人工的な光源に長時間晒されることが近視を始めとする様々な目の不調を引き起こしているものですが、失明にもつながりかねないと専門医は警鐘を鳴らしています。

myopia

です。

口語で"near-sightedness"とも言いますが、医学用語としては"myopia"が用いられます。

"myopia"の語源に着目してみましょう。

まず、-opiaという部分はギリシャ語で眼を意味するopsに由来します。そして、myo-という部分ですが、これは同じくギリシャ語mueinから来ており、閉じる（to close）という意味なのだそうです。

つまり眼を閉じる、眼をしばたかせる、というのが原義なのですが、これは近視の人が対象をよく見ようとして眼を細める様子を指しているそうです。近視、"myopia"については紀元前、アリストテレスの時代から、近視の人は対象物が像を結ぶようにするため眼を細めるということが知られていたそうです。

myo-という接頭辞には筋肉の意味が思い出されるのですが（例えば、心筋を意味するmyocardiaや、筋肉の障害を指すmyopathy）、"myopia"においては異なる語源であるというのは改めて確認したというところです。

surgical

アップルのスマホ、PCを使うならば否応無く利用することになるiCloudストレージは他のクラウドストレージサービスの参入を不当に阻んでいるとして、集団訴訟が提起されているという記事を読みました。

というくだりがありますが、ここで使われている"surgical"が今日取り上げたい表現です。

"surgery"は外科手術のことで、"surgical"はその形容詞形であることは言わずもがなです。

しかし、集団訴訟が提起する、iCloudサービスの独占を可能にしているアップル製品の"surgical restraint"、とは一体どういう意味でしょうか？

外科手術的な制約（事項）？とは分かったような、分からないような・・・。

記事で引用符付きで用いられていることから、通常の意味では無さそうです。

訴訟文書が公表されていますが、"surgical"が使われている箇所は以下の通りです。

Apple has accomplished this with surgical technological restraints. While competing cloud providers can access and host certain iPhone and iPad data (e.g., photos and videos), Apple arbitrarily sequesters a set of files (mainly app data and device settings) and denies all but iCloud permissions to host them.

ここでは、

surgical technological restraints

とありますが、ユーザーがiCloudを利用せざるを得ないよう、デバイスの設計においてアップル社が技術的な制約を設けた、それが"surgical"であると言っているものと解釈されます。

"surgical"の意味を改めて英和辞書で確認してみたのですが、それらしき用法は見つからなかったところ、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryには以下のような定義がありました。

characteristic of or resembling surgery or a surgeon especially in control or incisiveness

ここで言わんとしているのは、外科手術、また外科医に見られるような高い技術、正確性を持った、また特徴とした、ということであると思われます。

即ち、アップル社が自社のクラウドストレージに誘導すべく、非常に精緻なやり方でデバイスを設計した、ということなのでしょう。

このような"surgical"の用法について初めて知りました。

以下はコーパスから拾った用例ですが、軍事技術のコンテクストで用いられるようです。

これらの用例に見られる"surgical bombing campaign"、また"surgical military strike"とは、敵地において攻撃対象となる施設等に対して行うピンポイントでの攻撃を意味し、故に正確無比な高い技術、コントロールが要求されるものです。

こうぢて見てみると、アップルによる"surgical technological restraints"も何となくその意味するところが見えてきますが、さて何と訳したものでしょうか？

clap-back

一昨日の投稿で、Wendy’sが混雑時間帯の価格を上げる"surge pricing"を導入予定という記事を取り上げましたが、これに対し、競合するハンバーガーチェーンのBurger Kingが早速反応したようです。

Burger Kingは、お腹を空かせているお客さんに追加料金を払わせるなんて考えられない、とSNSに投稿し、Wendy’sの"surge pricing"導入を暗に非難、さらにはハンバーガーの無償提供（一定額購入客が対象）を行うとも発表しました。

Burger King is giving out free burgers for a limited time in a not-so-subtle clap-back at Wendy’s.

“We don’t believe in charging guests more when they’re hungry,” Burger King wrote in a press release announcing the Whopper freebie.

clap-back

という表現が使われているのですが、初めて見ました。英和辞書にエントリが見当たりませんが、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、アメリカ英語のインフォーマルな表現ということで、

US, informal

: a quick, sharp, and effective response to criticism

と定義されています。

日本語にすると、非難に対する応酬、しっぺ返し、といったところでしょうか。

今回の件で言えば、Burger Kingは非難された訳ではなく、Wendy’sの値上げ構想とそれに対する顧客の反応（その多くがWendy’sに批判的であることは言うまでもありません）を好機と見て自社ブランドの認知向上の一手を打ったというところです。この一手は当意即妙と言って良いでしょう。

"clap"は手を叩く、強く打つ、という意味ですが、Burger KingのSNS投稿、つまり"clap-back"を受けて、Wendy’sはそもそも価格吊り上げの意図は無かったとの苦しい釈明に追われているようです。
