― canckles

In the past few years, standing desks have gained popularity among office employees and anyone who must spend hours sitting working on a desk. Their advantage seemed obvious, and we were advised on the many benefits a standing desk could have on our health. The Smithsonian.com listed five benefits of standing desks that sounded almost miraculous: reduced risk of obesity, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases, reduced risk of cancer, and lower long-term mortality risk.

People and corporations flocked to buy and try this new office equipment to boost their productivity while improving their health. Many were quick to sing the praises of their new standing desks. Gwynn Guilford, a writer for Quartz, reported that within a week of using her standing desk, her back pain started receding; a month on, and she had almost forgotten about it.
(New Research Shows Standing Desks Can Be Hazardous To Your Health. Inquistr. February 27, 2018.)

Guilford also reported that along with the benefits she was experiencing by working on her feet, she soon noticed her ankles becoming swollen. She described them as “canckles,” a derogatory term which is a blend of “calf” and “ankle,” and is used to shame women who have less than perfect ankles. Additionally, according to the Washington Post, new research shows that standing desks may be harmful to your productivity and your health. The study, conducted by Curtin University in Australia suggests that standing at a desk for a prolonged period of time will create “discomfort and deteriorating mental reactiveness.” The research included only 20 people, so it is not very comprehensive; however, there are other more complete studies which show the negative effects of standing too long causes back discomfort and the swelling of veins.

canckles

Children are increasingly finding it hard to hold pens and pencils because of an excessive use of technology, senior paediatric doctors have warned.

An overuse of touchscreen phones and tablets is preventing children’s finger muscles from developing sufficiently to enable them to hold a pencil correctly, they say.

“Children are not coming into school with the hand strength and dexterity they had 10 years ago,” said Sally Payne, the head paediatric occupational therapist at the Heart of England foundation NHS Trust. “Children coming into school are being given a pencil but are increasingly not be able to hold it because they don’t have the fundamental movement skills.

“To be able to grip a pencil and move it, you need strong control of the fine muscles in your fingers,. Children need lots of opportunity to develop those skills.”
(Amelia Hill. Children struggle to hold pencils due to too much tech, doctors say. The Guardian. February 25, 2018.)

予防線を張る ― draw a line in the sand

Companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat are combining plant-based ingredients and science, rather than animals, to create fake-meat burgers and other products that taste like the real thing.

Now U.S. Cattlemen's Association is looking to draw a line in the sand.

The association launched what could be the first salvo in a long battle against plant-based foods. Earlier this month, the association filed a 15-page petition with the U.S. Department of Agriculture calling for an official definition for the term "beef," and more broadly, "meat."
(Jaden Urbi. Ranchers set to fight back against vegetarian 'fake meat.' USA Today. February 25, 2018.)

draw a line in the sand

rapprochement

North Korea’s Olympic athletes will not be bringing home any medals, but their participation may have earned the peninsula something more substantial.

By taking part so visibly alongside South Korea, Pyongyang has been able to present itself as a credible global and regional power in a way that has eluded North Korean leaders since the war that divided the peninsula. The real strategic winner, however, is the South Korean government, which has shrewdly used the games to reshape the diplomatic landscape.

For all the talk of reconciliation, neither North nor South Korea has much appetite for the compromises – or the catastrophic war – that reunification would take. What both countries have been desperate to do, however, is to blunt the potential threat of a major unilateral U.S. strike on Pyongyang’s nuclear facilities.

The potential for renewed dialogue puts Washington in a distinctly difficult position. This year, President Donald Trump’s administration had intended to ramp up military pressure on Pyongyang, reinforcing the Kim regime’s fears that further nuclear progress might lead to U.S. action. The Olympic rapprochement with the South, however, has compelled Washington to abort some of its plans, at Seoul’s request.
(Peter Apps. Commentary: South Korea's Olympic gambit traps both Kim and Trump. Reuters. February 23, 2018.)

The Olympic rapprochement with the South

Chink

A Taco Bell cashier has been fired after printing a racial slur on a customer’s receipt.

In Young Lee, a first-year Ph.D. student at Penn Medicine in Pennsylvania, visited a Taco Bell in Philadelphia at around 1:40 am, after a night out with some friends.

According to Lee, he ordered his food and gave the cashier a fake name of “Steve” to save time since trying to explain the spelling of his name is “inconvenient for both the cashier and me,” he told CBS Philly.

The interaction was normal, until Lee says he received his receipt and was angered at what was printed.

“Our interaction was very ordinary and cordial even until I saw my name on the receipt that read ‘STEVE CHINK,'” Lee wrote on Facebook.
(Alexandra Deabler. Taco Bell employee fired for 'derogatory slur' printed on receipt. Fox News. February 20, 2018.)

Chink
