奥の手 ― up one's sleeve

コンピュータのオペレーティングシステムであるウィンドウズと言えば、今や知らない人はいないくらい日常的なものとなりましたが、その製造元である米・マイクロソフト社もアップルやグーグルといった新興勢力に圧され気味、特にアップルのiPadを始めとするタブレット端末の分野では遅れを取っているようにも見えます。

が、マイクロソフトも今の状況を手をこまねいて見ているだけではないようです。同社がメディア向けに計画しているイベントが多くの憶測を呼んでいるようです。


Microsoft's mysterious media event scheduled for tomorrow has generated a log of speculation about what the software giant has up its sleeve, with many bets being placed on a new tablet to challenge Apple's iPad.

"up its sleeve"という表現が出てきますが、これは言わば“奥の手”という意味です。

この表現はトランプゲームに由来するもののようで、袖の中にひそかに隠しておいたカードを土壇場で切る、という行為から生まれた表現です。

構文的には、


have something up one's sleeve


という形を取ることが多く、"something"の部分は、"trick"であったり、"idea"であったり、奥の手となるものを表す名詞が入ります。

もう1つよく使われる慣用句として、


ace up one's sleeve


というものがあります。この"ace"はトランプのカードの”エース”であり、まさしく“奥の手”のことを言っています。

メディアイベントではマイクロソフトの奥の手が遂に明かされるのでしょうか？それとも憶測だけに終わるのでしょうか？
