日本は今や”ペット大国” ― a pet superpower

唐突ですが、ペットを飼っていますか？ちなみに子供はいらっしゃいます？

私は中学生を筆頭に子が3人です。子供がイヌを飼いたいと言いますが、今のところ飼ってはいません。

子を産もうが、ペットを飼おうが、好き好きでしょうが、"Why Japan prefers pets to parenthood"、というタイトルが刺激的です。なぜ日本（人）は親になるよりもペットを飼う方を好むのか？イギリス人に言われたくない、と一瞬思いましたが、事実ですから仕方ないと言えば仕方ありません。


In a smart and expensive neighbourhood of Tokyo, Toshiko Horikoshi relaxes by playing her grand piano. She's a successful eye surgeon, with a private clinic, a stylish apartment, a Porsche and two pet pooches: Tinkerbell, a chihuahua, and Ginger, a poodle. "Japanese dog owners think a dog is like a child," says Horikoshi. "I have no children, so I really love my two dogs."

Many Japanese women like Horikoshi prefer pets to parenthood. Startlingly, in a country panicking over its plummeting birthrate, there are now many more pets than children. While the birthrate has been falling dramatically and the average age of Japan's population has been steadily climbing, Japan has become a pet superpower. Official estimates put the pet population at 22 million or more, but there are only 16.6 million children under 15.

記事は極めて事実ベースであり、15歳以下の子供の人口（16万6千人）よりもペットの数（22万人）の方が多いと指摘します。今や日本は立派な”ペット大国”という訳です。

さて、今日の表現です。”ペット大国”を"a pet superpower"と表現しています。

"superpower"という単語にほとんどなじみがなかったのですが、文字通り、"super"な"power"ということになります。American Heritageを引いてみました。


A powerful and influential nation, especially a nuclear power that dominates its allies or client states in an international power bloc.


ランダムハウス英和辞書では初出が1923年、Merriam Websterによると1920年、ということなので比較的新しい単語です。"especially nuclear power"とありますから、冷戦時代を経て定着した単語なのではないかと思います。

”大国”であるとされる理由は様々です。"superpower"の前に来る修飾語（形容詞）が違ってきます。

”経済大国”であれば、"economic"ですし、

”軍事大国”となると、"military"です。

戦後は経済大国として復興を遂げた日本ですが、今となっては"pet superpower"・・・ですか。
