今週末、うるう秒を実施 ― Hold on a second!

今年の1月にうるう秒（leap second）について取り上げたのを覚えておられるでしょうか？

その時にうるう秒というものの存在を初めて知ったのですが、なんとうるう秒の実施が今週末土曜日の6月30日に予定されています。直近の実施は2008年だったということですから、約4年ぶりの実施と言うことになります。

先月金環日食の話題に沸いたばかりですが、今月はうるう秒挿入の歴史的タイミング（！）を体験してみてはいかがでしょう？


Hold on a second and let it sync in


TIME will stand still for a second on Sunday morning when the nation's timekeepers add a second to keep the atomic clock in sync with the Earth.

While it might not sound like much, the added second has a vital job. Just as a day is added in a leap year to keep the seasons in sync with the calendar, the leap second keeps the clock in order by closing the gap caused by the slowing rotation of the Earth against the reliably precise atomic clocks.

記事のタイトル（ヘッドライン）が面白いです。

"Hold on a second."は、日本語で言うと、”ちょっと待って！”、という意味です。電話口で、相手に切らないように伝える時によく使うフレーズです。

このフレーズで"a second"は厳密な1秒間を指しているのではなく、単に”ちょっとの間”を意味しているにすぎないのですが、この記事の内容に至っては厳密な1秒間のことであり、言いえて妙です。

うるう秒は6月30日の最後、つまり23時59分59秒の後に23時59分60秒という、実際には存在しない秒を付け加えるということです。今回引用した記事によると、


The leap second will be added to the last minute of June 30, Co-ordinated Universal Time, which equates to 10am on Sunday, July 1.

と解説されており、7月1日日曜日の午前10時に相当する、とありますが、これはオーストラリアでの話なので、日本だと、7月1日日曜日午前9時になるものと思われます。

どんな観測ができるのか知りませんが、歴史的な瞬間に立ち会ってみてはいかがでしょうか？
