愛好家 ― geek

以前から気になっていた単語の1つに、"geek"という単語があります。ITなどのテクノロジー関連のコンテクストで聞かれることの多い単語です。


FORTUNE -- The tech world's attention will turn to Apple headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. Tuesday, where the company is rumored to debut the enhanced high-end iPhone 5S and the lower-cost iPhone 5C. Other devices, potentially the long-rumored iWatch, could also be showcased.

"The loyalty of Apple users is at stake, both the geeks as well as regular consumers," said Peter Warman, founder of research firm Newzoo.

That's because the impending launch of iOS 7 will impact users of older iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch devices. These consumers will be forced to upgrade to a new device because an increasing number of apps or updates no longer will work on the older operating systems.

記事はもうすぐ発表されるらしいとの噂でもちきりの新しいiPhoneに関するものです。

"geek"を辞書で引くと、サーカスの見世物芸人とか奇人、変人という意味が見えます。元々そういう意味だったのだと思われますが、上記の引用でもそうですが、現代ではコンピュータなど、特定のテクノロジーに通じた人間のことを指す呼称として用いられています。

むしろ、古い意味での用例を探すほうが難しそうです。語源を見てみると、オランダ語もしくはドイツ語起源らしく、間抜けを意味する"geck"に由来するとあります。

Merriam Websterのオンライン辞書では下記のように定義されています。


an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity

"a technological field or activity"とありますが、実際の用例をコーパスで検索してみると実にさまざまな分野で使われているようです。例えば、


beer geek
wine geek


もあれば、


bike geek
drama geek
gardening geek


など色々な"geek"があり、マニアックな内容が存在する処、"geek"と呼ばれる人あり、と言ってもよさそうです。

要は“愛好家”と呼ばれる層が"geek"に相当する訳で、上記の引用でも"regular consumers"と対比させて"geek"を用いていることからもそのように解釈してよいのではないかと思います。
