中華料理のレストランに行くとよく見かける回転式テーブルがあります。

円卓の上に設置されており、円盤に載せた料理を回転させることで、円卓に座る各自の目の前に料理が来るので取りやすくなります。

これを英語で、


lazy Susan


と言うそうなのですが、非常に興味深い表現です。

"lazy Susan"は直訳すれば、「怠け者のスーザン」となりますが、中華料理の円卓設備が何故そのように言われるようになったのでしょうか？

一説によれば、「スーザン」はウェイトレスの女性で、楽をするために円卓の設備を思いついた、ということに由来するということですが、では「スーザン」が一体誰だったのかについては分かっていないということです。。

"lazy Susan"と言う代わりに、"dumbwaiter"という単語もあるようです。この"dumbwaiter"も同様に、円卓の設備のお蔭で仕事が無くなったということに由来するようです。
