pipe dream


と言います。「絵空事」という日本語がありますが、まさに夢物語というような計画、目標のことを言います。

Merriam-Websterでは下記のように定義されています。

なぜ、"pipe dream"というのかについてですが、"pipe"とはアヘンを吸引するパイプのことで、アヘン中毒患者が夢想するようなレベルの話であるという例えから生まれたようです。

Online Etymology Dictionaryによりますと、初出は1870年とされています。アヘン戦争は1840年ですから、それより少し後ということになりますか・・・。
