感染が拡大する一方の新型肺炎ですが、日本国内では初めてとなる、中国に渡航歴のない男性の感染が確認され、今朝のトップニュースになっています。

朝食を食べながら聞いていたラジオニュースでの専門家の解説によりますと、新型肺炎に対する特効薬は存在せず、対症療法しかないとのことでした。

新薬（ワクチン）の登場が待ち望まれるところであろうと思われますが、米国では既に開発は始まっているようです。

That timeline is optimistic, and a phase 1 trial does not mean "you have a vaccine that's ready for deployment," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services. It could take a year or more before a vaccine is ready for sale to the public, he said.

"It will take three months to get it into the trial, three months to get safety, immunogenicity data," Fauci said during a press briefing on the nation's response to the coronavirus. しかしながら、新薬の開発には通常でも何年も（あるいは10数年も）かかると言われていますので、現在の感染の急拡大には間に合わないことはあきらかです。

ここで"fast-track"という表現に注目です。

この"fast-track"の"track"とは、恐らく路線とか車線、あるいは陸上競技場のトラック（走路、レーン）のことを指しています。

陸上のトラックだと一番速い走者は最も内側のレーンを走ります。また、鉄道の路線は鈍行と急行、新幹線では当然違ってきます。道路における緊急車両やバスの専用レーンというものもあります。

従って、"fast-track"は、以下の定義からも分かる通り、ある目的のために迅速処理を行うという意味の動詞の意味で用いられるようになったようです。
