こんな意味もあったの？ ― teen

関東地方、首都圏は今朝は少し冷え込みました。（と言っても、10度を下回ったという程度ですが。）

今夜から明日の朝にかけては雨から雪に変わるという予報であり、明日の朝は積雪も予想されるとラジオの天気予報で聞きました。

明日から大学入試センター試験が行われるという事で、受験生の移動に影響が出なければ良いのですが。

New York Post紙の記事からの引用です。

New York Cityでも週末は凍えるような寒さになるという予報のようです。

ところで、引用した記事では、


temperatures will... plunge into the teens at night


というくだりがありますが、この"teen(s)"というのは言うまでもなく気温のことを指しています。

「ティーンズ」（teens）と聞くと、十代の若者ととっさに思ってしまいますが、年齢のみならず、気温にも用いられるというのは不勉強ながら知りませんでした。

つまり、13度～19度の範囲を示している訳ですが、ここでは華氏（Fahrenheit）の話ですから、摂氏（Celsius）では"teens"は大体、マイナス10度からマイナス7度になります。

記事では下記のようなくだりもあります。


By nightfall, the mercury will dip to the low 20s, but it will feel like the teens due to winds.
(ibid.)


"it will feel like the teens"という部分がそうですが、風のせいで体感気温がさらに低く感じられる、というところでしょうか。

“teens”とはいえ、寒さのレベル感はこれまた違うというお話しでした。
