今朝、グーグルニュースをチェックしていましたら、米・フィラデルフィア郊外で銃乱射事件が発生し、けが人多数、という見出しに目が留まりました。

十数年以上前ですが、フィラデルフィアに数か月滞在したことがあり、思い出深い都市ということもあって、どこで発生したのかと、記事にアクセスしました。

Eight people were shot near a SEPTA train station in Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon, police said.

One person is in custody, authorities said, adding that two weapons were recovered.

The victims are between the ages of 17 and 71, police said.

"It’s very brazen," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said of the afternoon shooting.

ところで、記事を読んでびっくりしたのが、引用部分最後のところ、いわゆる警視総監と呼ばれる一番エライ人の名前です。

"Danielle Outlaw"という名前ですが、アウトロー（outlaw）とは一体？

興味を持ったのでググってみますと、スペルミスでも何でもなく、確かに"Danielle Outlaw"さんは存在していて、まさしくフィラデルフィアの警察組織のトップに立つ女性です。

黒人女性としては史上初の警視総監だそうです。

およそ法の執行に携わる人の名前に似つかわしくないファミリーネームは就任当初から話題となったらしく、下記のような記事にたどり着きました。

Philly’s new head of police is a California native named Danielle Outlaw.

When she’s sworn in as commissioner in February, Outlaw will be the first Black woman ever to hold the post. That historic milestone wasn’t lost on Philadelphians.

The recognition played out alongside some social media smirking. Let’s be honest — a high ranking law enforcement officer named “Outlaw” is pretty hilarious.

The name is indubitably inaptronymous. Which is to say, a person named Outlaw working in law enforcement is ironic, because the name is the opposite of the profession.

似つかわしくない、相応しくない名前、ということで、記事中出てくるのが、

inaptronymous

という単語です。

辞書には載っていないのですが、「不適当な」という意味の"inapt"（否定の接頭辞in-、と"apt"からなります）と、言葉、名前を意味するギリシャ語-onymから構成されていると想像されます。

逆に、相応しい名前ということでは、"aptronym"（また、aptonym、euonym、とも）という単語が存在しますが、こちらも手元の辞書には載っていませんでした。

"Outlaw"という姓については、古ノルド語の起源を持ち、米国ではノースカロライナ州に多く見られるそうですが、やはりかなり稀なファミリーネームということです。
