ひこうき雲 ― vapor trail

飛行機雲のことを英語で、

vapor trail

と言います。実を言うと知りませんでした。小説を読んでいたら出てきたので辞書を引きました。

別名としては、

contrail

というのですが、これは"condensation trail"から来ています。

飛行機雲の正体は、飛行機のエンジンの熱により生ずる水蒸気だそうです。この水蒸気が上空の低い気温によって凝結して（condensation）、飛行機の後を引きずるように（trail）見えるので、そのように呼ばれるのだそうです。

良く晴れた空に飛行機雲が長くたなびいているのを見ることがありますが、飛行機雲が形成されるのは気象条件にもよるそうですから、必ず見られるとも限らないようです。

昨日、たまたまこの単語に出くわし、そしてこれまた偶然という他ないのですが、夕方のラジオで松任谷由実さんの「ひこうき雲」を耳にしました。（松任谷由実さんのアルバムの表記ではローマ字になっていて、英語は見当たりませんが。）

Answer: No, it is not true. Contrails are ice crystals formed by moisture in the atmosphere heated by a jet engine, then refrozen.

I have heard the conspiracy theories regarding contrails and they are all false.

Q: What is in the chemtrails?

A: The term chemtrails is misleading. There are people that believe the white contrails seen behind jets at cruising altitude are made up of some kind of chemicals that the airplane is spraying. They are incorrect -- the white trail behind a jet is the condensation in the air having been heated by the engines and then frozen by the cold temperature. Variability in the level of moisture in the air determines when contrails are visible and when they do not form.
