バイデン大統領がホワイトハウスでジャーマンシェパードを飼っているというのは、確か就任時のニュースの一環で聞いたことがありました。

そのジャーマンシェパードにはメジャー（Major）という名前が付けられているそうですが、そのメジャー君が人に噛みつくという事件があったそうで、ニュースで取り上げられています。

The Bidens' dog Major has been involved in another biting incident that required medical attention, two people with knowledge of the incident tell CNN.

The incident, which involved a National Park Service employee, took place on the White House South Lawn on Monday afternoon. The employee was working at the time and needed to stop in order to receive treatment from the White House medical unit.

First lady Jill Biden's press secretary Michael LaRosa told CNN that Major is "still adjusting to his new surroundings."

一度ならず二度目のことだったということなのですが、一度目は警護担当者に噛み付いたそうで、記事のくだりは以下のように続きます。

On March 8, Major caused an injury to a Secret Service employee at the White House, doing enough damage that the person needed treatment from the White House medical team.

At the time, White House press secretary Jen Psaki referred to the injury as "minor," and chalked up Major's behavior to "getting acclimated and accustomed to their surroundings and new people."

Psaki said Major was "surprised by an unfamiliar person."

ホワイトハウス報道官のサキ氏がコメントしているのが引用されているのですが、

chalked up Major's behavior to "getting acclimated and accustomed to their surroundings and new people."

というくだりで使われている、"chalk up (to)"という表現を取り上げたいと思います。

このフレーズを知りませんでしたが、辞書には、

～のせいにする、～に帰する

とありました。

上記引用のくだり部分のいわんとするところは、メジャー君の噛み付きたがるのは周囲の環境に慣れようとしていることによるものだろう（新しい環境に慣れていないためだろう）、ということだと思います。

ところで、"chalk"というのはあの「チョーク」（白墨）です。

その動詞が「～のせいにする」という意味になるのは興味深いものがあります。

このフレーズの由来について明確に説明した資料は見当たりませんが、やはりチョークでものを書きつけておくことと関係があるそうです。

今時チョークを使うのは学校現場（小、中、高校まで？）くらいかと思いますが、かつては店舗や事務所には黒板にチョークというのが一般的だったようです。

チョークで書きつけておいたのは酒場の勘定書とか集計、スポーツの試合のスコアだったりした訳ですが、要は書き付けておくほどの大事なこと、ということであろうと思われます。

"chalk up"という動詞句の意味には「得点する」、「利益を上げる」という意味もあるそうですから、それらを書きつけるというのは、行為の結果を明確にしておくということでもあります。

大事なことを書き付けておく、という意味合いが発展して、結論を明確にする、（行為や結果の）原因と見なす、という意味でも使われるようになったと解釈できるかもしれません。
