朝刊のスポーツ面を見ていたら、先日10月8日に開催されたシカゴマラソンで世界記録が更新されたとのことでした。

新記録は2時間0分35秒で、いよいよ人類がマラソンで2時間を切ることも視野に入ってきそうであります。

ところで、同じくシカゴマラソンでの話題ですが、ランナーがレース途中に迷い猫を保護したという記事を読みました。

自己ベスト更新ペースで走っていたSarah Bohanさんは21マイル付近で子猫を見つけ、一旦レースを中断。保護した子猫を観客に託し、レース再開したそうです。一般ランナーとはいえ、練習のジョギング中というならまだしも、記録更新のかかったレースでなかなかできることではありません。

Bohan had a split-second decision to make; should she put the kitten back down on the sidewalk, let it chart its own path, and chase down her personal record, or should she keep hold of the kitten, walk the course, and take the time to find it a safe place to land?

The kitten was in luck. Bohan is an animal lover with two rescue cats of her own back home in Boston. Better yet, she was running Sunday's marathon with TEAM PAWS Chicago — a group representing an animal welfare organization.

How could she not sacrifice her own race time for the benefit of a helpless little creature?

So Bohan nuzzled the kitten, which she estimated weighed less than a pound, into her chest and set off to find a kind bystander who would offer the cat a loving home. Along the way, she crossed paths with fellow animal lover and marathon runner Gia Nigro, who joined Bohan in searching for a kitty caretaker.

記事中で"nuzzle"という単語が使われているのですが、これは知りませんでした。スペルが"nozzle"や"muzzle"に似ていますが、初めて見る単語です。

辞書を引くと、鼻を擦り付ける、という意味が載っています。なるほど、鼻（nose）と関係がある単語のようです。

そのほかの意味として、抱き寄せる、抱いて可愛がる、といった意味があり、選手が道端で弱っていた子猫を胸元に抱き上げている様子がイメージされます。

"nuzzle"は、においを嗅いだりする際に鼻を地面に向けることを元々意味したものですが、"nestle"（体をすり寄せる）や"nurse"（介抱する）といったスペルの似た単語の影響もあってこのような意味を持つに至ったようです。
