週明けの朝、いつものようにネット上のニュースを斜め読みしていましたら、目に入ってきたのが以下の見出し。

イスラエルがハマス掃討のため、パレスチナ自治区ガザに攻撃を開始しましたが、ガザ地区に住む人のことを、

Gazan

というのだと知りました。

ところで、さらにスクロールしてニュース一覧を読んでいると、今度は、

Here’s how many Utahns have gotten the new COVID-19 shot

という見出しが目に留まりました。

Fewer than 5% of all Utahns have received the latest COVID-19 shot since it was released in mid-September, a rate that lags behind nationwide numbers that are being described as “absymal.”

米国・ユタ州に住む人のことは、

Utahn

というのだと知った次第です。

"Gazan"も"Utahn"も、地名に接尾辞-anが付いたもので、アメリカ（America）に住む人をAmericanというように、取り立てて変わっている話でもないと思いました。

しかし、敢えて言うならば、ユタ州は"Utah"ですから、"Utahan"でなく、"Utahn"というのはどうなのか？音韻上の例外ということなのか？という疑問はありました。

興味があって少し検索してみると、実のところ、"Utahan"と"Utahn"のどちらが正しいのか議論がある、というのです。

What about Utaan? Utahnian? Utonian? There seem to be myriad demonyms for those who call the Beehive State home, but can there be more than one right answer?

A Dec. 31, 1980, Associated Press article published in the Beaver County Times highlighted the discrepancy between local and national terminology:

"The U.S. Government and Printing Office is trying to give state residents a lesson on how to spell Utahan, but Utahns just won't listen," it said. "According to the printing office, residents of the Beehive State are Utahans, not Utahns. That's also the opinion of Webster's New World Dictionary, which doesn't even list Utahn as an alternative form."

記事の解説するところによれば、アメリカ政府印刷局は"Utahan"が正しいとしてきましたが、当のユタ州民は"Utahn"が正しいと主張してきたという歴史があるそうです。

また、多くの辞書では"Utahan"というスペルを掲載し、"Utahn"を別スペルとして併記する辞書もあるものの、少数派のようです。

始めの方に引用したニュース記事のソースであるDeseret Newsは、ユタ州ソルトレークシティに本拠を置くDeseret Management Corporationの子会社であり、170年の歴史があるローカルメディアです。なるほど、"Utahan"とせず、"Utahn"を貫いているのだなと思いました。
