coup de grace

約6600万年前に絶滅した恐竜ですが、地球に落ちた隕石がその原因になったと言われているのは聞いたことがある話だと思います。

今日読んだ記事によれば、隕石の落下の後に引き起こされた諸環境の変化が恐竜の生存を脅かしたという最新の研究があるそうです。

具体的には隕石が粉々になって大気に散らばり、太陽の光が届きにくくなったりしたことで、多くの生物が生存することができない状況になったということです。

It was, to put it mildly, a bad day on Earth when an asteroid smacked Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula 66 million years ago, causing a global calamity that erased three-quarters of the world's species and ended the age of dinosaurs.

The immediate effects included wildfires, quakes, a massive shockwave in the air and huge standing waves in the seas. But the coup de grâce for many species may have been the climate catastrophe that unfolded in the following years as the skies were darkened by clouds of debris and temperatures plunged.

"coup de grâce"はフランス語です。英訳すると、blow of mercyとなります。"coup"はクーデター（coup d’état）という語に使われる"coup"に同じです。

慈悲の一撃、情けの一撃、とでもなりますが、致命傷を負った相手がこれ以上苦しむことがないようお見舞いする「トドメの一撃」ということです。

そこから、ある物や人の終焉をもたらすことになった原因や出来事、という意味で使われるようになったということです。
