クレジットカードの磁気情報を盗み出す手口のことを「スキミング」と呼ぶというのは、多くの方が聞いたことがあると思います。

カードには情報を記録した磁気ストライプがあり、店舗やATMではそれを読み取って決済する訳ですが、そこを悪用するというものです。

「スキミング」は英語で"skimming"と書きます。掬い取る、最良（最上）の部分を取るという意味の動詞"skim"から来ています。

ところで、こうしたスキミングを防止するために、最近のカードにはICチップが埋め込まれていると理解していましたが、それさえもかいくぐり、情報を窃取する方法があるとは知りませんでした。

あまり聞いたことがないと思うのですが、"shimming"と呼ばれる手口があるそうです。「スキミング」を悪用する輩、また用いられる仕掛けは"skimmer"ですが、"shimming"に対しては"shimmer"となります。

Have you ever had your debit card or credit card information stolen from an ATM? If you have, you may have fallen victim to a skimmer. Tiny devices used by fraudsters called "skimmers" can be attached to ATMs and used to steal data off of your debit or credit card magnetic strip.

There's also an even smaller device called a "shimmer" that can be installed by fraudsters into an ATM that steals data from your credit or debit card chip if you have a newer chip-based card.

"skimming"と"shimming"の違いは、チップの情報を読み取るか否かの違いです。スキミングではチップの情報を窃取することはできませんが、"shimming"はそれが出来てしまう、ということです。

また、スキミングにおいて、ATMなどに施された仕掛けは見た目にも分かるということですが、"shimming"のそれは一見して分からないということらしく、被害にあわないためには、怪しいATMを利用しないということくらいしかないようです。

さて、疑問は"shimming"という名称はどこから来ているのか、ということでしたが、なかなか説明したものにあたりませんでした。

以下の記事（2018年と5年以上も前のものですが）によると、"shimming"に用いる薄い板のような仕掛けを"shim"と呼び、ここから来ているようです。

The emergence of chip-enabled credit cards was supposed to help eliminate vulnerability to identity theft and fraud because those cards could not be "skimmed." But fraudsters are persistent, and they've found a way to lift information from chip cards using this new technique called "shimming," which first occurred in places like Mexico and Arizona several years ago.

With this new technique, scammers insert a paper-thin device, or "shim," enabled with a microchip and flash storage directly into the dip-and-wait slot on card readers that accepts chip-enabled cards.

American Heritage Dictionaryでは"shim"を、

A thin, often tapered piece of material, such as wood, stone, or metal, used to fill gaps, make something level, or adjust something to fit properly.

と定義しています。

機械や器具などにおいて傾きやすり減った部分を補正するために詰めたり差し込んだりする薄い木片や金属片、くさびのようなものをシムと呼ぶそうですが、その「シム」から来ています。
